ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir Ritonavir
Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir Ritonavir falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: algin is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. The concern is that this gel could grab onto a swallowed pill and slow or reduce how much of your hepatitis C medicine (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, sold as Technivie) actually gets absorbed. With these antivirals, keeping steady blood levels matters, since too little drug could mean the treatment doesn't fully knock down the virus.
The good news is this is only a theoretical worry based on lab work, not real-world reports, and it's rated minor. A simple fix is timing: take your Technivie first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before taking an algin supplement. Food amounts of seaweed are unlikely to matter. Please confirm your plan with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

“Technivie (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir) treats hepatitis C, and because a cure depends on holding steady drug levels for the whole course, this list warrants genuine care. Most of the 154 ingredients on file touch the CYP3A4 enzyme pathway, meaning they can push the drug's blood levels up or down.”

- Digestive health and feeling full

Algin (alginate) is a fiber-like substance from brown seaweed that is widely used as a thickener, gel, and binder in foods and medicines. Its best-known medical use is in heartburn products, where it forms a barrier that helps reduce acid reflux; evidence for other uses like lowering cholesterol or weight loss is weaker. About Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir, and Ritonavir
What Is Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir, and Ritonavir Used For?
Brand name: Technivie
-
The combination of ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir is usually used in combination with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol), but sometimes it is used alone to treat a certain type of chronic (long-term) hepatitis C infection (swelling of the liver caused by a virus). Ombitasvir is a hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS5A inhibitor. It works by stopping the virus that causes hepatitis C from spreading inside the body. Paritaprevir is a protease inhibitor. It works by decreasing the amount of HCV in the body. Ritonavir is a protease inhibitor. It helps to increase the amount of paritaprevir in the body so that the medication will have a greater effect. It is not known if ombitasvir, paritaprevir, or ritonavir prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
