Raloxifene falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with raloxifene (Evista) and algin: because algin is a soluble seaweed fiber that forms a thick gel in your stomach, there's a theoretical chance it could trap some of your raloxifene and keep a little of it from being absorbed. Raloxifene already isn't absorbed very well to begin with, so anything that grabs onto it in the gut is worth a thought.

I want to be honest, though, this concern comes from lab and pharmacology reasoning, not from real patient studies, so it's rated minor. If less drug gets in, you'd mainly worry about it working a bit less for your bones or breast cancer risk reduction. An easy fix is spacing them out: take your raloxifene first, then the algin about 30 to 60 minutes later. Run it by your pharmacist to be sure.

Algin (alginate) is a fiber-like substance from brown seaweed that is widely used as a thickener, gel, and binder in foods and medicines. Its best-known medical use is in heartburn products, where it forms a barrier that helps reduce acid reflux; evidence for other uses like lowering cholesterol or weight loss is weaker. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but check with your pharmacist before using it as a supplement, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What Is Raloxifene Used For?

Brand name: Evista

Raloxifene tablets are approved for postmenopausal women for two main purposes: treating and preventing osteoporosis (thinning of the bones), and reducing the risk of invasive breast cancer. The breast cancer risk-reduction use applies to postmenopausal women who already have osteoporosis or who are otherwise considered at high risk for invasive breast cancer.

Important limits apply: raloxifene is not used to treat existing breast cancer, prevent breast cancer from coming back, or prevent noninvasive breast cancer. It does not eliminate breast cancer risk entirely. Women taking it for breast cancer risk reduction should continue regular breast exams and mammograms.
