Ritonavir falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with ritonavir (Norvir): algin is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. In theory, that gel could grab onto a pill you swallow nearby and slightly change how much gets absorbed. Since ritonavir is an HIV medicine that works best when blood levels stay steady, you don't want anything nudging its absorption up or down.

The good news is this concern is theoretical and based on how algin behaves in the lab, not on real-world cases with ritonavir. Still, to play it safe, a simple gap helps: take your ritonavir first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before using algin. If you take any seaweed-based heartburn or fiber product regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Ritonavir Used For?

Brand name: Norvir

Ritonavir (brand name Norvir) is used together with other HIV medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and children older than one month of age. It is always taken as part of a combination regimen — never on its own.

Norvir oral powder is specifically indicated for pediatric patients with HIV-1 infection. Norvir tablets and oral solution are indicated for both adults and pediatric patients with HIV-1 infection. Ritonavir tablets (generic) are also indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in combination with other antiretroviral agents.
