Simeprevir Sodium falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: algin is a soluble seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. The thought is that this gel could trap or slow the absorption of a swallowed medication like simeprevir, so a little less might get into your bloodstream. With an HCV medication, you really want full, steady levels, because too little can weaken how well it knocks down the virus over a long course of treatment.

I want to be honest about how soft this concern is. It's theoretical, based on lab work and how fiber behaves, not on real cases with simeprevir. Food amounts of algin are unlikely to matter. If you use an algin supplement or heartburn product, a good habit is spacing it 30 to 60 minutes after your dose. Always run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Simeprevir Used For?

Brand name: Olysio

  • Simeprevir is used along with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol) and peginterferon alfa (Pegasys) to treat chronic hepatitis C (an ongoing viral infection that damages the liver). Simeprevir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body. Simeprevir may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
