Here's the simple version. Aluminum hydroxide products like Amphojel or Gaviscon work by neutralizing acid in your stomach to ease heartburn, sour stomach, and ulcer pain. The concern with Alpinia (lesser galangal) is that it might nudge your stomach to make a little more acid, which could in theory work against the antacid and leave you feeling like it isn't quite doing its job.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is. It rests on a few scattered reports, not solid human studies, and it's rated as a minor interaction. Everyday cooking amounts of galangal are very unlikely to cause any trouble. If you're using concentrated Alpinia capsules and notice your heartburn relief slipping, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor.
