Alpinia and Rivaroxaban

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Rivaroxaban and Alpinia in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Alpinia safety at a glance

Alpinia overall Use caution Generally well tolerated as a food, but supplement-level safety is not well studied.
Pregnancy Avoid Not enough safety data, so avoid medicinal amounts during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding Avoid Lack of safety data means it is best avoided in supplement form while breastfeeding.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Rivaroxaban

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Rivaroxaban is filed under 5 classifications — including anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs, p-glycoprotein substrates, cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) substrates. Alpinia has documented interactions with 4 drug classes — the most serious being antacids (minor), h2-blockers (minor) and indomethacin (tivorbex) (minor) — and none of Rivaroxaban’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What Rivaroxaban’s Own FDA Label Lists

This is not an interaction — none of it involves Alpinia. These are the most notable effects listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Rivaroxaban’s own FDA label, for the medication by itself. Knowing the drug’s own list makes it easier to work out the likely cause if something new turns up while you take both. 5 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Bleeding in the gut Worth acting on mentioned in 10.5% of FDA reports for Rivaroxaban
  • Bleeding or bruising Worth acting on mentioned in 17.6% of FDA reports for Rivaroxaban
  • A stroke or mini-stroke Worth acting on
  • Blood clots Worth acting on
  • An irregular heartbeat Worth acting on
  • Cough
  • Vomiting

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Rivaroxaban. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 205,037 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Rivaroxaban that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Alpinia’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Alpinia side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Alpinia has no side effects.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Rivaroxaban

This page covers Alpinia only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Rivaroxaban page lists 285 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Danshen (major), Grapefruit (major), Piracetam (major) and St. John's Wort (major).

By severity: 5 major · 240 moderate · 40 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Rivaroxaban page

“Grapefruit is the interaction I would flag first for anyone taking rivaroxaban (Xarelto). It slows how the body clears this blood thinner, and higher levels mean more bleeding risk.”

About Alpinia

What is Alpinia?

Alpinia
  • Digestive upset and bloating
  • Nausea
  • Anti-inflammatory support
  • Respiratory and cough complaints
  • Antimicrobial
  • Appetite stimulant

Alpinia (lesser galangal) is a ginger-family root long used in Asian cooking and traditional medicine, mainly for digestive and inflammatory complaints. Most of its proposed health benefits come from laboratory and animal studies, and strong human evidence is lacking. Food amounts are generally well tolerated, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.

Alpinia officinarum · Zingiberaceae · Rhizome (root) · Dried rhizome, powder, capsules, tea, tincture, essential oil, culinary spice

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Alpinia is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Alpinia record says about it on its own.

Alpinia: dosing

There is no standardized, well-established medicinal dose for Alpinia. Amounts used in traditional medicine and supplements vary widely depending on the form, whether it is a tea, powder, capsule, or tincture. The safest approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed the recommended amount. They can help you decide if it is appropriate and how much is reasonable.

About Rivaroxaban

What Is Rivaroxaban Used For?

Brand name: Xarelto

Rivaroxaban tablets are used to reduce the risk of stroke in adults with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm), treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT, a blood clot in a vein) and pulmonary embolism (PE, a blood clot in the lungs), and lower the chances of these clots coming back. They also help prevent clots after hip or knee replacement surgery, protect hospitalized patients at risk for clots, and — in combination with aspirin — reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with coronary artery disease (CAD) or peripheral artery disease (PAD).

Rivaroxaban tablets are also approved for treating VTE (venous thromboembolism, blood clots in veins) and preventing recurrence in pediatric patients from birth to under 18 years, and for preventing clots in children aged 2 and older with congenital heart disease after the Fontan procedure. Rivaroxaban for oral suspension (available as Rivaroxaban Granule and Xarelto oral suspension) is specifically indicated for these two pediatric uses.
