Esomeprazole, Naproxen falls under PROTON PUMP INHIBITORS (PPIs) — the group Alpinia interacts with.

Theoretically, alpinia might decrease the effectiveness of PPIs.
There are some reports suggesting that alpinia increases stomach acid.

Vimovo combines two medicines: esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor that quiets stomach acid, and naproxen, an anti-inflammatory for pain. The esomeprazole half is there partly to protect your stomach from naproxen, which can irritate the lining. So the concern here is really about that acid-lowering part of the pill.

The thinking is that concentrated alpinia (lesser galangal) supplements might nudge stomach acid back up, which could work against esomeprazole and leave you with more heartburn or stomach discomfort. Honestly, this is theoretical and based only on scattered reports, so it is far from proven. Everyday cooking amounts of galangal almost certainly do not matter. If you want to use a strong alpinia supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.
