Naloxegol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group American Elder interacts with.

Theoretically, taking American elder might increase levels of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist for Movantik (naloxegol). Your body clears this drug using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies hint that American elder may slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, naloxegol could build up in your system and hit a little harder than expected. With this medicine, that usually means more belly cramping, stomach pain, diarrhea, or nausea.

That said, this is only a theoretical concern from test-tube research, not from people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Occasional culinary amounts of properly cooked elderberry are far less likely to matter than concentrated daily supplements. Still, since naloxegol already warns against strong CYP3A4 blockers, please run any elderberry supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

American elder is a North American plant whose cooked, ripe berries and flowers are used mainly for colds, flu, and general immune support. The science behind these uses is limited and most studies focus on the closely related European black elder (Sambucus nigra), so benefits are uncertain. Only properly prepared berries and flowers should be used, since raw berries, leaves, bark, and seeds can cause poisoning.

What Is Naloxegol Used For?

Brand name: Movantik

Movantik (naloxegol) is used to treat opioid-induced constipation (OIC) — constipation caused by opioid pain medications — in adults who have chronic non-cancer pain. It is also approved for adults with chronic pain related to prior cancer or its treatment, as long as they don't need frequent (roughly weekly) increases in their opioid dose.

It is not indicated for constipation from other causes, and it is not approved for use in children.
