Here's the idea behind this one. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down vinblastine and clear it from your body. In lab dish studies, American elder seemed to slow that same enzyme down. If that were to happen in a real person, vinblastine could build up to higher levels than expected, which might mean stronger side effects like worse nausea, mouth sores, constipation, nerve tingling, or a bigger drop in your white blood cells (raising infection risk).

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's only based on test tube research, not studies in people, so it's theoretical. Still, vinblastine is a serious chemo drug with a narrow safety margin, so don't add elderberry products on your own. Please run it past your oncology team or pharmacist first.

American elder is a North American plant whose cooked, ripe berries and flowers are used mainly for colds, flu, and general immune support. The science behind these uses is limited and most studies focus on the closely related European black elder (Sambucus nigra), so benefits are uncertain. Only properly prepared berries and flowers should be used, since raw berries, leaves, bark, and seeds can cause poisoning.

What Is Vinblastine Used For?

Brand name: Velban

Vinblastine Sulfate Injection is used in the treatment of a range of cancers. Conditions that tend to respond well include generalized Hodgkin's disease, lymphocytic lymphoma, histiocytic lymphoma, advanced mycosis fungoides (a type of skin lymphoma), advanced testicular cancer, Kaposi's sarcoma, and Letterer-Siwe disease (a rare immune condition also called histiocytosis X).

It may also be used for cancers that respond less reliably, such as choriocarcinoma resistant to other chemotherapy drugs, and breast cancer that has not responded to hormonal therapy. Vinblastine is often given as part of a combination chemotherapy regimen alongside other cancer medicines to improve response rates.
