Case reports of cardiotoxicity have been documented with American mistletoe, and it should not be used with antihypertensive drugs or by individuals with cardiac conditions. American mistletoe is uncommon in dietary supplements, and formulations containing it are generally homeopathic. European mistletoe, which lacks phoratoxin, is more commonly used.

Here's the simple version: your Capozide (captopril plus hydrochlorothiazide) is working hard to relax your blood vessels and lower your blood pressure. American mistletoe pulls in the opposite direction. It contains a toxin called phoratoxin that can tighten blood vessels and raise both blood pressure and heart rate. So taking the two together can basically fight your medication and undo the benefit you're aiming for.

There are real case reports of mistletoe harming the heart, so this isn't just a lab worry. The good news is American mistletoe is rarely found in supplements, and the holiday plant should never be eaten anyway. Please don't change your blood pressure medicine, but do check in with your pharmacist or doctor before using any mistletoe product.

What Is Captopril and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Capozide, Acezide

Captopril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). The two ingredients work together to lower blood pressure more effectively than either one alone.

This combination may be started as initial therapy or substituted when a patient has already been adjusted on both ingredients separately. It is approved for patients with normal kidney function, and is used more cautiously in those with impaired kidney function.
