Why this applies to Bendroflumethiazide, Nadolol

Theoretically, artichoke leaf extract may increase the risk of hypotension when taken with antihypertensive drugs.
A meta-analysis of small clinical studies in patients with hypertension shows that taking artichoke can reduce systolic blood pressure by around 3 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by around 2 mmHg when compared with placebo.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Corzide combines two blood pressure medicines: nadolol, a beta-blocker, and bendroflumethiazide, a water pill (thiazide diuretic). Both already work to bring your blood pressure down. Artichoke leaf extract may nudge your numbers down a little more, with studies showing only a small drop (roughly 3 points on the top number and 2 on the bottom).

This is a theoretical concern based on how things add up, not a strong warning. Still, if your pressure drops too low, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or faint when standing up quickly. If you'd like to try artichoke, check in with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your blood pressure. Don't change your Corzide on your own.
