Verapamil falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Artichoke interacts with.

Theoretically, artichoke leaf extract may increase the risk of hypotension when taken with antihypertensive drugs.
A meta-analysis of small clinical studies in patients with hypertension shows that taking artichoke can reduce systolic blood pressure by around 3 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by around 2 mmHg when compared with placebo.

Here's the gist: artichoke leaf extract may nudge your blood pressure down a little on its own. In studies, that effect was small, roughly 3 points on the top number and 2 on the bottom. Since verapamil is already working to relax your blood vessels and lower your pressure, stacking artichoke on top could add to that effect.

For most people this is mild, but if your readings drift too low you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, or tired, especially when standing up quickly. Keep in mind this concern is mostly theoretical and based on how these things behave, not strong proof. Verapamil isn't a prodrug, so this is about additive blood pressure lowering, not changed drug levels. If you want to try artichoke, check with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your numbers.

What Is Verapamil Used For?

Brand names: Isoptin SR, Verelan, Isoptin, Calan SR, Verelan SR, Calan, Covera HS, Verap, Veramil

Verapamil tablets and film-coated tablets are used to treat angina — including vasospastic (Prinzmetal's) angina, unstable angina, and chronic stable angina — as well as certain abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and high blood pressure (essential hypertension). For arrhythmias, regular-release tablets are used alongside digoxin to control heart rate in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation, and to help prevent episodes of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a type of rapid heartbeat.

Extended-release and sustained-release oral forms (tablets and capsules) are indicated specifically for high blood pressure. Verapamil hydrochloride injection is used in hospital settings for rapid conversion of SVT to normal rhythm and for temporary control of fast heart rates in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation.
