ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
Why this applies to Saxagliptin, metformin XR
Saxagliptin, metformin XR falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Artichoke interacts with.
A meta-analysis of small clinical studies shows that taking artichoke leaf extract for 8-12 weeks can modestly reduce fasting plasma glucose when compared with placebo.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: Kombiglyze (saxagliptin plus the extended-release metformin) already works to lower your blood sugar. Artichoke leaf extract may nudge your blood sugar down a little bit on its own, so stacking the two could theoretically push your numbers lower than expected. That can show up as shakiness, sweating, dizziness, hunger, or feeling foggy.
I want to keep this in perspective. This is a theoretical concern based on how these things work, plus some small studies showing a modest glucose drop. It's not a dramatic interaction, and food-amounts of artichoke on your plate aren't the worry, concentrated supplement doses are. If you want to try it, let your pharmacist or doctor know first and keep an eye on your readings.
