Nephrotoxic Drugs
Why this applies to Hydrochlorothiazide, Spironolactone
Hydrochlorothiazide, Spironolactone falls under Nephrotoxic Drugs — the group Asian Water Plantain interacts with.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the simple version. Your blood pressure pill combines two water pills, hydrochlorothiazide and spironolactone, and both lean on your kidneys to do their job. Asian water plantain (Ze Xie) is itself a traditional diuretic, so the main concern is two things pushing your kidneys in the same direction at once.
The actual safety signal here is weak. It comes from animal studies using very high doses of the extract over long stretches, where they saw raised kidney markers. At normal human amounts the risk looks very small. Still, it's worth being a little cautious, since spironolactone can already raise potassium and both drugs can affect kidney function and fluid balance. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't change your medication on your own.
