Here's the idea behind this pairing. Satralizumab (Enspryng) works by calming a piece of your immune system to protect the nerves affected by NMOSD. Astragalus, on the other hand, has been studied for the opposite reason: in lab and animal research it seems to rev up immune activity. So the theoretical worry is that astragalus could push back against what your medication is trying to do, possibly making it less effective and raising the chance of an NMOSD flare.

I'll be honest about the evidence here. This concern comes from test-tube and animal studies, not real-world cases in people taking satralizumab, so it's a cautious flag rather than a sure thing. Still, because this drug guards your nervous system, I'd run any astragalus supplement by your neurologist or pharmacist first.

  • Satralizumab-mwge injection is used to treat neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD; an autoimmune disorder of the nervous system that affects eye nerves and the spinal cord) in certain adults. Satralizumab-mwge is in a class of medications called interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor inhibitors. It works by blocking the activity of the part of the immune system that may damage certain areas of the nervous system in people with NMOSD.
