Beer and Aspirin, Hydrocodone

These two interact in 4 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 4 Interactions?

Beer interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Hydrocodone falls into 4 of those categories, so it can interact with Beer in 4 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Major).

Major

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 4

Why this applies to Aspirin, Hydrocodone

Aspirin, Hydrocodone falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Beer interacts with.

Concomitant use may increase sedative and other adverse effects.
Concomitant use of alcohol with CNS depressants can increase sedative and other adverse effects, potentially through inhibition of the metabolism of certain CNS depressants.
Severity Major Likelihood Likely Evidence C

Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combination pill pairs aspirin with hydrocodone, an opioid pain reliever. The bigger concern with beer here is the hydrocodone side. Both alcohol and opioids slow down your brain and breathing, and stacking them adds up fast. Together they can leave you very drowsy, dizzy, confused, or slow to react. In larger amounts the real danger is dangerously slow breathing, which can be life-threatening.

On top of that, the aspirin and alcohol can both be hard on your stomach lining, raising the risk of irritation or bleeding. This is a well-recognized, serious interaction, so please don't drink beer while taking this medication, and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have questions.

NONSTEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS (NSAIDs)

Aspirin, Hydrocodone also falls under NONSTEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS (NSAIDs).

Concomitant use may increase the risk of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding.
Concomitant use of NSAIDs with alcohol can increase the risk of GI bleeding.
Severity Major Likelihood Probable Evidence C

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combination pill pairs aspirin (an NSAID-type blood thinner that's tough on the stomach lining) with hydrocodone (an opioid pain reliever). The concern here is mostly with the aspirin half. Aspirin already irritates your stomach and gut, and adding beer pushes that risk higher. Together, alcohol and aspirin can raise your chance of stomach and intestinal bleeding.

Watch for warning signs like black or tarry stools, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, stomach pain, or feeling unusually dizzy or weak. There's also a second issue: beer adds to the drowsiness and slowed breathing the hydrocodone can cause, so you may feel extra sedated. It's safest to skip alcohol while taking this. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

NARCOTIC DRUGS

3 of 4

Aspirin, Hydrocodone also falls under NARCOTIC DRUGS.

Concomitant use of large amounts of alcohol may decrease the metabolism of narcotic drugs.
Concomitant consumption of large amounts of alcohol can decrease the metabolism of narcotic drugs.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence C

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combo pill pairs hydrocodone (an opioid pain reliever) with aspirin. The concern here is mostly about the hydrocodone side. When you drink a lot of alcohol with an opioid, your body may clear the drug more slowly, so more of it sticks around. On top of that, both beer and hydrocodone calm down the nervous system, and those effects stack up.

Together that can mean heavier drowsiness, dizziness, slowed breathing, and even dangerously low breathing at higher amounts. Aspirin plus alcohol also raises the odds of stomach upset or bleeding. The risk grows with how much you drink. An occasional small beer is different from heavy drinking, but please check with your pharmacist or doctor about what's safe for you.

ASPIRIN

4 of 4
Concomitant use may increase the risk of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding.
Concomitant use of aspirin with alcohol can increase the risk of GI bleeding. Conversely, some clinical research suggests that beer can significantly decrease the area under the curve (AUC) and maximum plasma concentration of aspirin, indicating decreased bioavailability.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combo product pairs aspirin with hydrocodone, an opioid pain reliever. The main concern with beer is the aspirin half. Alcohol and aspirin together can irritate your stomach lining and raise the chance of GI bleeding, things like stomach pain, dark or tarry stools, or even vomiting that looks like coffee grounds. There's also some lower-quality research hinting beer may lower how much aspirin you actually absorb, but the bleeding risk is the bigger real-world worry.

Don't forget the hydrocodone piece too. Adding alcohol to any opioid can deepen drowsiness, slow your breathing, and cloud your thinking. That's a serious combination. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before drinking beer while taking this medication.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Hydrocodone page

“Combining supplements with aspirin and hydrocodone (Lortab ASA, Alor 5 500) deserves real vigilance, because this medication carries two separate kinds of risk. Aspirin thins the blood, and by far the largest share of these interactions can add to that effect and raise bleeding risk.”

About Beer

What is Beer?

Beer
  • Social and recreational drinking
  • Relaxation
  • Heart health (popular belief)
  • Bone health (popular belief)
  • Source of antioxidants and B vitamins

Beer is an alcoholic beverage that contains some minerals, B vitamins, and plant compounds from hops and grain, but it is not a health supplement. Any possible benefits come only from light-to-moderate intake, and they are easily outweighed by the well-known harms of alcohol. The safest amount of alcohol for health is none, and beer should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
