Here's the simple version: bortezomib (Velcade) is processed by your liver, and it can stress the liver on its own. Drinking beer adds another job for that same organ. When alcohol and a liver-taxing cancer drug pile up together, the risk of liver irritation or damage goes up. This isn't about beer changing how the drug fights your cancer, it's about protecting your liver while you're on treatment.

Watch for signs like yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain on the right side, unusual tiredness, or nausea. Regular doses of beer are more concerning than a rare sip, but with a serious medicine like this, the safest amount of alcohol is none. Please talk with your oncologist or pharmacist before drinking any alcohol during treatment.

Bortezomib is used to treat two types of cancer in adults: multiple myeloma (a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow) and mantle cell lymphoma (a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma). These indications are shared across the available products — Velcade, Boruzu, and generic bortezomib formulations.
