Beer and Dasiglucagon Hydrochloride

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Dasiglucagon Hydrochloride

Dasiglucagon Hydrochloride falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Beer interacts with.

Concomitant use may interfere with blood glucose control.
Alcohol can impair gluconeogenesis and may increase the risk of acute hypoglycemia when used concomitantly with antidiabetes drugs. However, the carbohydrates in beer may also worsen glycemic control in patients with diabetes.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence C

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the key thing to understand about Zegalogue (dasiglucagon): it's an emergency rescue medicine that works by telling your liver to dump its stored sugar into your blood when you're dangerously low. The catch is that alcohol blocks your liver's ability to make and release sugar. So if you've been drinking beer and then need this shot, your liver may not respond the way it should, and the rescue effect can be weaker or shorter.

This matters most for someone with diabetes who has had a few drinks and then crashes low. The beer can both worsen blood sugar control beforehand and blunt your safety net during a severe low. This isn't a reason to change anything on your own. Please talk with your doctor or pharmacist about how alcohol fits with your low-blood-sugar plan.

“Dasiglucagon (Zegalogue) is an emergency injection that rapidly raises blood sugar during a severe diabetic low, so a supplement list this large deserves genuine care. All 239 interacting ingredients act through blood glucose, and most of them lower it, deepening the very crashes this drug exists to reverse.”

About Beer

What is Beer?

Beer
  • Social and recreational drinking
  • Relaxation
  • Heart health (popular belief)
  • Bone health (popular belief)
  • Source of antioxidants and B vitamins

Beer is an alcoholic beverage that contains some minerals, B vitamins, and plant compounds from hops and grain, but it is not a health supplement. Any possible benefits come only from light-to-moderate intake, and they are easily outweighed by the well-known harms of alcohol. The safest amount of alcohol for health is none, and beer should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
