These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combination cough and cold product contains hydrocodone, an opioid that calms the brain and slows breathing. Beer is alcohol, and alcohol is also a central nervous system depressant. When you stack the two together, their slowing effects add up. You can become much more drowsy, dizzy, and foggy than you'd expect, and in larger amounts the real danger is dangerously slow, shallow breathing. Alcohol can also slow how your body clears the opioid, letting it build up.

This is a well-recognized, serious pairing, so it's worth taking seriously. The pseudoephedrine in this product is a stimulant that may mask how impaired you actually are. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before drinking any beer while using this medicine.

This combination product contains hydrocodone, an opioid, and that is the piece I worry about most with beer. Drinking large amounts of alcohol can slow down how your body breaks down narcotics like hydrocodone, so more of it can build up in your system. On top of that, both alcohol and opioids calm the brain, and stacking them adds up.

What that can look like in real life: heavier drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, and in worse cases dangerously slow or shallow breathing. The pseudoephedrine and guaifenesin parts are not the main concern here. Even an occasional beer plus this medicine is a combination I would run by your pharmacist or doctor first before mixing them.

About Beer

What is Beer?

Beer
  • Social and recreational drinking
  • Relaxation
  • Heart health (popular belief)
  • Bone health (popular belief)
  • Source of antioxidants and B vitamins

Beer is an alcoholic beverage that contains some minerals, B vitamins, and plant compounds from hops and grain, but it is not a health supplement. Any possible benefits come only from light-to-moderate intake, and they are easily outweighed by the well-known harms of alcohol. The safest amount of alcohol for health is none, and beer should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
