Here's the gist with Ingrezza (valbenazine) and berberine. Ingrezza can already cause drowsiness, and animal studies hint that berberine may have a calming, sedative effect of its own. Put them together and the worry is that those effects could add up, leaving you feeling more sleepy or sluggish than usual.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's mostly theoretical, based on lab and animal work, so it may not show up in real life at all. In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence show that berberine can inhibit CYP2D6. Theoretically, use of berberine with drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 might increase drug levels and increase the risk of adverse effects.

Here's the gist for Ingrezza (valbenazine). Your body partly relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to break this medication down and clear it. Berberine appears to slow that same enzyme, so in theory the level of valbenazine in your blood could creep up higher than usual.

If that happens, you might notice more of valbenazine's typical side effects, things like drowsiness, fatigue, trouble with balance, or in some cases changes in heart rhythm (a longer QT interval). I want to be honest though: this is mostly theoretical, based on lab work and some early studies, not strong human data. Still, since valbenazine affects the heart's rhythm, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding berberine.

What Is Valbenazine Used For?

Brand name: Ingrezza

Valbenazine — sold as Ingrezza and INGREZZA Sprinkle — is approved for two conditions in adults. The first is tardive dyskinesia, a movement disorder that causes uncontrolled, repetitive facial or body movements, often brought on by long-term use of certain psychiatric medications. The second is chorea associated with Huntington's disease, which refers to the involuntary, dance-like jerking movements that are a hallmark of that condition.

Both Ingrezza and INGREZZA Sprinkle are approved for both of these uses.
