Here's the simple version: Levemir (insulin detemir) already lowers your blood sugar, and bitter melon can nudge it down too. Stack the two together and those effects can add up, which raises your chance of going too low. That's hypoglycemia, and with a long-acting insulin like detemir it can show up as shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, confusion, or feeling lightheaded.

This isn't a far-fetched concern. Several smaller studies back it up, so it's worth taking seriously. The key word is monitoring. If you want to try bitter melon, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor first and check your blood sugar more closely than usual. Don't adjust your insulin dose on your own.

What Is Insulin Detemir (rDNA Origin) Injection Used For?

Brand name: Levemir

Levemir (insulin detemir) is used to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in adults and children with type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes. It is a basal insulin, meaning it works around the clock to keep background blood sugar levels steady.

Levemir is not recommended for treating diabetic ketoacidosis (a dangerous buildup of acids in the blood that requires a different type of insulin).
