Bumetanide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Black Hellebore interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of potassium depleting diuretics and black hellebore can increase the risk of cardiac glycoside toxicity due to potassium depletion. Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Here's the concern with mixing these two. Bumetanide (Burinex) is a strong water pill that pushes your kidneys to flush out salt and water, and along the way it also drags potassium out of your body. Black Hellebore, meanwhile, contains compounds that act on the heart much like the cardiac glycosides found in plants like foxglove. When potassium levels drop low, the heart becomes more sensitive to those heart-acting chemicals, which raises the risk of dangerous, irregular heart rhythms.

To be honest, this is a theoretical worry based on how these substances behave, not on solid human studies. But Black Hellebore is genuinely toxic and has no safe modern use, so I would not combine it with anything. Please talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any product that contains it.

What Is Bumetanide Used For?

Brand name: Burinex

Bumetanide treats edema — excess fluid that builds up in the body — caused by congestive heart failure, hepatic (liver) disease, and renal (kidney) disease, including a condition called nephrotic syndrome. This applies to the oral tablets (bumetanide and Bumex), the injection (Bumetanide Injection), and the nasal spray.

Enbumyst (bumetanide nasal spray) is specifically approved for these same uses in adults. Enbumyst is not intended for long-term use and should be switched to an oral diuretic as soon as practical.
