Methazolamide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Black Hellebore interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of potassium depleting diuretics and black hellebore can increase the risk of cardiac glycoside toxicity due to potassium depletion. Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Here's the simple version. Black Hellebore contains natural compounds that act on your heart much like digoxin-type chemicals, and on top of that it can be quite toxic. Methazolamide (Neptazane) is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor used for glaucoma, and like many diuretic-type drugs it can gradually lower your body's potassium. When potassium runs low, the heart becomes more sensitive to those hellebore compounds, which raises the theoretical risk of dangerous heart rhythm problems.

To be honest, this concern is based on pharmacology, not strong human studies, and Black Hellebore really shouldn't be used as a supplement at all because it's poisonous. Please don't take any product containing it without first checking with your doctor or pharmacist.

What Is Methazolamide Used For?

Brand name: Neptazane

Methazolamide tablets are used to treat eye conditions where lowering intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye) is expected to help. These include chronic open-angle glaucoma and secondary glaucoma.

Methazolamide tablets are also used before surgery in acute angle-closure glaucoma, when reducing eye pressure ahead of the procedure is needed. Note that long-term use in angle-closure glaucoma is not appropriate.
