Black Pepper + Amoxicillin

Black Pepper has a minor interaction with Amoxicillin. Theoretically, black pepper might increase the effects and side effects of amoxicillin.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
AMOXICILLIN (Amoxil, Trimox)
Animal research shows that taking piperine, a constituent of black pepper, with amoxicillin increases plasma levels of amoxicillin. This has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: piperine, the active part of black pepper, may slow down some of the proteins in your gut and liver that normally clear medications out. The thinking is that this could let a little more amoxicillin hang around in your bloodstream. Amoxicillin is an active antibiotic on its own (not a prodrug), so more of it in the body could mean slightly stronger effects and a bit more chance of side effects like an upset stomach, nausea, or loose stools.
That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This was only seen in animal studies, never reported in people, and it's rated a minor interaction. The black pepper you sprinkle on dinner is not a concern. If you take concentrated piperine supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.
- Hiwale, A. R., Dhuley, J. N., and Naik, S. R. Effect of co-administration of piperine on pharmacokinetics of beta-lactam antibiotics in rats. Indian J Exp.Biol. 2002;40(3):277-281.

About Black Pepper
What is Black Pepper?
- Flavoring and culinary use
- Digestive complaints like bloating and indigestion
- Boosting absorption of other supplements
- Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support
- Cold and congestion remedies
Black pepper is a common kitchen spice that is generally safe in the amounts used in food. Its extract, piperine, is mostly added to supplements to help the body absorb other ingredients (like curcumin from turmeric). Strong human evidence for black pepper treating specific health conditions is limited, so use supplement-strength products with care and check with your pharmacist.
About Amoxicillin
What Is Amoxicillin Used For?
Brand names: Amoxil Capsules, Trimox, Wymox, Amix, Amoram, Amoxident, Galenamox, Rimoxallin, Amoxil Injection
Amoxicillin treats infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It does not work on viruses. The label lists these uses:
- Ear, nose and throat infections
- Genitourinary tract (urinary and genital area) infections
- Skin and skin structure infections
- Lower respiratory tract (lung and airway) infections
- Adults only: H. pylori infection with duodenal ulcer disease, combined with other medicines
Amoxicillin for Oral Suspension (Amoxil and other labels) also lists acute uncomplicated gonorrhea. It is not recommended as a first guess for gonorrhea because of high resistance rates.

Amoxicillin Is Linked to Lower Levels of 8 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Amoxicillin as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Black Pepper — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
