Why this applies to Axitinib

Axitinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Bog Labrador Tea interacts with.

In vitro research shows that aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Bog Labrador tea leaves can increase the concentration of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes. Extracts obtained from different geographical regions in Quebec resulted in differing potency of CYP3A4 induction. Bog Labrador tea might increase the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), diltiazem (Cardizem), estrogens, indinavir (Crixivan), amiodarone (Cordarone), ticagrelor (Brilinta), triazolam (Halcion), and others.

Here's the gist for axitinib (Inlyta). Your liver clears this cancer drug mainly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab studies, Bog Labrador tea seemed to speed up that enzyme. If it does the same in people, your body could break down axitinib faster, leaving less of it in your blood. For a kidney cancer medicine, that's the worry: weaker drug levels could mean it doesn't fight the cancer as well as it should.

I want to be honest about how shaky this evidence is. It's only test-tube and animal data, not real patients, and the tea's strength varies a lot from plant to plant. Still, because axitinib matters so much, don't add this tea without checking first. Please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist.

What Is Axitinib Used For?

Brand name: Inlyta

Axitinib (brand name Inlyta) is used to treat advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC), a type of kidney cancer. Inlyta can be used as a first-line treatment — meaning the very first treatment you receive — when combined with either avelumab or pembrolizumab, two other cancer medicines.

Inlyta is also approved as a single agent (on its own) for patients with advanced RCC who have already tried one other systemic (body-wide) cancer therapy that did not work or stopped working.
