Bog Labrador Tea and Triazolam

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Triazolam

Triazolam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Bog Labrador Tea interacts with.

In vitro research shows that aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Bog Labrador tea leaves can increase the concentration of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes. Extracts obtained from different geographical regions in Quebec resulted in differing potency of CYP3A4 induction. Bog Labrador tea might increase the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), diltiazem (Cardizem), estrogens, indinavir (Crixivan), amiodarone (Cordarone), ticagrelor (Brilinta), triazolam (Halcion), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for your sleep medication. Triazolam (Halcion) gets cleared from your body by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies suggest that Bog Labrador tea may rev up that enzyme, which would speed up how fast triazolam is broken down. In plain terms, the tea could make triazolam clear out faster, leaving less of it to do its job. You might notice it doesn't help you fall asleep as well as it normally does.

Now, the honest part: this is based only on test-tube research, not on people, so we really don't know how strong the effect is in real life. An occasional cup likely matters less than regular, concentrated use. Before pairing the two, run it past your pharmacist or doctor so your insomnia stays controlled.

About Bog Labrador Tea

What is Bog Labrador Tea?

Bog Labrador Tea
  • Coughs and respiratory complaints
  • Digestive upset and diarrhea
  • Anxiety and stress
  • As a warm beverage
  • Aches and pains (traditional use)

Bog Labrador tea is a wetland shrub whose leaves have long been brewed as a traditional beverage and folk remedy, especially among Indigenous peoples of North America. There is very little human research to confirm any health benefit, and the plant is closely related to species that contain toxic compounds, so it should be used cautiously and in moderation. Pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it, and anyone considering it should talk with a pharmacist or doctor first.
