Why this applies to Mitapivat

Mitapivat falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Bog Labrador Tea interacts with.

In vitro research shows that aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Bog Labrador tea leaves can increase the concentration of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes. Extracts obtained from different geographical regions in Quebec resulted in differing potency of CYP3A4 induction. Bog Labrador tea might increase the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), diltiazem (Cardizem), estrogens, indinavir (Crixivan), amiodarone (Cordarone), ticagrelor (Brilinta), triazolam (Halcion), and others.

Here's the gist for you. Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down Mitapivat (Pyrukynd). Lab studies suggest Bog Labrador tea may rev up that enzyme, meaning your body could clear the medication a little faster. Mitapivat is not a prodrug, so speeding up its breakdown would tend to lower the amount in your blood and could make it work less well for your pyruvate kinase deficiency.

The practical worry isn't more side effects, it's that your anemia might not be controlled as well, so you could feel more tired or run-down. That said, this is based only on test tube research, not real people, so it may not matter in practice. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

About Mitapivat

What Is Mitapivat Used For?

Brand name: Pyrukynd

Mitapivat is available as two separate branded products approved for different conditions. Pyrukynd is used to treat hemolytic anemia — a type of anemia caused by red blood cells breaking down too quickly — in adults who have pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiency, a rare inherited blood disorder. Aqvesme is used to treat anemia in adults with alpha- or beta-thalassemia, inherited conditions that affect how the body makes hemoglobin.

These are distinct approvals. Pyrukynd and Aqvesme are not interchangeable, and each is approved only for its specific indication.
