Why this applies to Ponesimod

Ponesimod falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Bog Labrador Tea interacts with.

In vitro research shows that aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Bog Labrador tea leaves can increase the concentration of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes. Extracts obtained from different geographical regions in Quebec resulted in differing potency of CYP3A4 induction. Bog Labrador tea might increase the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), diltiazem (Cardizem), estrogens, indinavir (Crixivan), amiodarone (Cordarone), ticagrelor (Brilinta), triazolam (Halcion), and others.

Here's the gist with Ponvory (ponesimod) and Bog Labrador tea. Lab studies suggest this tea may rev up an enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear ponesimod. If that enzyme works faster, your medication could be cleared a bit more quickly, which in theory might make it slightly less effective at controlling your MS over time.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It comes from test-tube and extract studies, not from people taking ponesimod, and the strength varied a lot between tea samples. So this is more of a theoretical concern than a proven problem. Still, since ponesimod matters for your MS, I'd run it past your pharmacist or neurologist before drinking it regularly. Don't change your dose on your own.
