Theoretically, taking boldo with hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of hepatic injury and disease.
Boldo leaf contains ascaridole, a known liver toxin. Many cases of hepatotoxicity, including elevated liver transaminase levels and jaundice, have been reported in patients taking boldo.

Here's the simple version: this isn't about Boldo changing how your Nextstellis (drospirenone and estetrol) birth control pill works. It's about the liver. Boldo leaf naturally contains ascaridole, a compound that can be hard on the liver, and there have been real reports of people developing liver irritation and even jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) after taking it.

Hormonal birth control pills can also occasionally stress the liver. So stacking both together could, in theory, add up and raise the chance of liver trouble. To be fair, this is based on scattered case reports, not strong studies, so it's more of a caution than a sure thing. If you're considering Boldo, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, and choose ascaridole-free products only.

Boldo is a South American shrub whose leaves are traditionally used for digestive and gallbladder complaints, but good human evidence is very limited.
