Theoretically, taking boldo with hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of hepatic injury and disease.
Boldo leaf contains ascaridole, a known liver toxin. Many cases of hepatotoxicity, including elevated liver transaminase levels and jaundice, have been reported in patients taking boldo.

Here's the thing to know about pairing Boldo with minocycline. This isn't about one changing the strength of the other. Instead, both can be hard on your liver. Minocycline, like other tetracyclines, can occasionally irritate the liver, and boldo leaf contains a compound called ascaridole that has been linked to liver injury, including raised liver enzymes and even jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Stacked together, that combined load could, in theory, raise your risk of liver trouble. I'll be honest, this is based on scattered case reports rather than strong studies, so it's a caution and not a sure thing. Still, watch for warning signs like belly pain, dark urine, unusual tiredness, or yellowing skin, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Theoretically, taking boldo with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding.
Animal and in vitro research shows that boldine, a constituent of boldo, has antiplatelet activity. In one case report, an adult taking a combination of boldo and fenugreek with warfarin experienced an increase in international normalized ratio (INR); however, it is unclear if this effect was due to boldo, fenugreek, the combination, or another factor.

Here's an honest heads-up: the interaction we have on file pairs Boldo with blood thinners (anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs), not really with Minocycline. Minocycline is an antibiotic, not a blood thinner, so this particular interaction doesn't line up neatly with how Minocycline works in your body.

The concern with Boldo is that one of its components, boldine, might slightly increase bleeding risk, and that worry comes from animal and lab studies plus a single case report involving warfarin. That's very thin evidence. Since Minocycline isn't an anticoagulant, I wouldn't expect a meaningful bleeding problem just from combining these two. Still, Boldo can stress the liver, and so can Minocycline on rare occasions, so please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

Boldo is a South American shrub whose leaves are traditionally used for digestive and gallbladder complaints, but good human evidence is very limited. The leaves and oil contain ascaridole, which can be toxic to the liver, so only ascaridole-free products should be used and only for short periods. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Minocycline

What Is Minocycline Used For?

Brand names: Vectrin, Dynacin, Minocin, Minocin IV, Solodyn, Acnamino MR, Minocin MR, Sebomin MR, Aknemin, Arestin Miscrosperes, Amzeeq, Zilxi

Oral and intravenous minocycline products treat many serious bacterial infections, including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, respiratory tract infections, sexually transmitted infections such as lymphogranuloma venereum and nongonococcal urethritis, plague, cholera, brucellosis, tularemia, and others caused by susceptible organisms. MINOCIN Intravenous is used when oral therapy is not adequate or tolerated.

Extended-release oral minocycline tablets are indicated specifically for inflammatory lesions of moderate to severe acne vulgaris in patients 12 years and older — not for treating infections. AMZEEQ (topical foam) treats inflammatory lesions of moderate to severe acne vulgaris in patients 9 years and older. ZILXI (topical foam) and EMROSI (oral capsule) are indicated for inflammatory lesions of rosacea in adults. ARESTIN (oral powder placed by a dental professional) is used alongside scaling and root planing to reduce pocket depth in adult periodontitis.
