Boldo leaf contains ascaridole, a known liver toxin. Many cases of hepatotoxicity, including elevated liver transaminase levels and jaundice, have been reported in patients taking boldo.

Here's the gist for your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel combo). This isn't about boldo changing how well your pill works. Instead, it's about your liver. Boldo leaf can contain a compound called ascaridole that may be hard on the liver, and there have been real-world reports of liver irritation (raised liver enzymes, even jaundice) in people taking it.

Estrogen-containing pills can also occasionally stress the liver on their own. So stacking the two could, in theory, raise the chance of liver trouble. This is based on scattered case reports, not strong proof, so don't panic. Still, if you want to try boldo, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, and only use ascaridole-free products briefly.

Boldo is a South American shrub whose leaves are traditionally used for digestive and gallbladder complaints, but good human evidence is very limited.
