Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Hydrocodone
Acetaminophen, Hydrocodone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Broccoli interacts with.
Pharmacokinetic research in humans shows that eating 500 grams of fresh broccoli daily for 6-12 days can increase CYP1A2 activity by 10% to 200%. Induction of CYP1A2 activity by broccoli is attributed to its glucosinolate constituents.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the honest picture for your Vicodin or Norco (acetaminophen with hydrocodone). Large amounts of broccoli (think 500 grams of fresh broccoli daily for over a week) can gently rev up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. That enzyme plays only a small, side role in how these two drugs are handled, so this is mostly a theoretical concern, not a strong, proven one.
If anything did shift, faster clearance could slightly weaken pain relief rather than cause harm. A normal serving of broccoli at dinner is very unlikely to matter at all. Keep eating your veggies. I'd only double-check with your pharmacist if you're using concentrated broccoli extract supplements daily.
