Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Tasimelteon
Tasimelteon falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Broccoli interacts with.
Pharmacokinetic research in humans shows that eating 500 grams of fresh broccoli daily for 6-12 days can increase CYP1A2 activity by 10% to 200%. Induction of CYP1A2 activity by broccoli is attributed to its glucosinolate constituents.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for tasimelteon (Hetlioz): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to break it down. Research shows that eating large amounts of broccoli (around 500 grams a day for a week or more) can speed that enzyme up. When the enzyme works faster, your body may clear tasimelteon a bit quicker, which could make it less effective at helping you fall asleep or keep your sleep-wake cycle on track.
Keep in mind this is mostly theoretical and based on limited human data, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. A normal serving of broccoli at dinner is very unlikely to matter. It's really concentrated extracts or eating big amounts daily that raise the question. If you're considering a broccoli supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
