Buchu may have antiplatelet effects. Theoretically, buchu may enhance the effects of anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs and increase the risk of bleeding in some patients. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's the thing to know about ibrutinib (Imbruvica): on its own it can raise your risk of bleeding and bruising. That's a well-recognized part of how this cancer medicine works, so people on it may notice easier bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums.

Buchu is thought to have mild antiplatelet effects, meaning it may make blood a little slower to clot. Stack that on top of ibrutinib and, in theory, you could see a bit more bleeding or bruising than usual. I'll be honest with you though, this concern rests on weak, anecdotal evidence, not solid studies. Still, with a drug like ibrutinib I'd play it safe. Please check with your oncology team or pharmacist before adding buchu, and tell them right away about any unusual bleeding.

Buchu is a fragrant South African shrub whose leaves are traditionally used for urinary and bladder complaints and as a diuretic. Solid human studies are lacking, so its benefits are largely unproven, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have kidney or liver problems.

What Is Ibrutinib Used For?

Brand name: Imbruvica

Imbruvica (ibrutinib) is used in adults to treat chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL), including cases with a specific genetic change called 17p deletion. It is also used in adults to treat Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (WM), a rare type of slow-growing blood cancer.

Imbruvica is also approved for adults and children aged 1 year and older with chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) — a serious immune complication that can occur after a stem cell or bone marrow transplant — when at least one prior treatment has not worked.
