Here's the gist for clozapine: it has noticeable anticholinergic properties, meaning it dampens the action of acetylcholine in your body. That's part of why it can cause things like dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, and a faster heart rate. Calabar bean works in the opposite direction. Its main compound, physostigmine, makes acetylcholine build up, so in theory it could push back against some of clozapine's anticholinergic effects.

Honestly, this is a theoretical concern only, based on how these two work, not on real patient cases, and it's rated minor and unlikely. The much bigger issue is that Calabar bean itself is genuinely poisonous and should never be used as a supplement. Please don't take it, and run any questions by your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Clozapine Used For?

Brand names: Clozaril, Versacloz

Clozapine is used for two specific situations. First, it is prescribed for people with severe schizophrenia who have already tried other antipsychotic medications and have not gotten adequate relief. It is reserved for this group because of its serious risks.

Second, clozapine is used to lower the chances of repeated suicidal behavior in people with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who are considered to be at ongoing, chronic risk. It is not a first-choice medication — it is used when the need is serious and other options have fallen short.
