Here's the thing to know about pairing calamus with bumetanide. Bumetanide is a strong water pill that pulls extra fluid and salt out through your urine, and lowering that fluid can also nudge your blood pressure down. Animal studies suggest calamus may slow the heart a bit and relax blood vessels, which can lower blood pressure too. Stack those two effects and you could, in theory, drop your pressure too far.

What that might feel like is dizziness, lightheadedness when you stand up, weakness, or even fainting. I'll be honest though, this is based only on lab and animal research, not solid human studies, so the real-world risk is uncertain. Given that calamus has its own safety concerns, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.

What Is Bumetanide Used For?

Brand name: Burinex

Bumetanide treats edema — excess fluid that builds up in the body — caused by congestive heart failure, hepatic (liver) disease, and renal (kidney) disease, including a condition called nephrotic syndrome. This applies to the oral tablets (bumetanide and Bumex), the injection (Bumetanide Injection), and the nasal spray.

Enbumyst (bumetanide nasal spray) is specifically approved for these same uses in adults. Enbumyst is not intended for long-term use and should be switched to an oral diuretic as soon as practical.
