Your Viskazide combines two blood pressure medicines: hydrochlorothiazide (a water pill) and pindolol (a beta-blocker that calms the heart). Here's the concern with calamus: animal studies suggest it can slow the heart and gently lower blood pressure on its own. Stacked on top of your medication, which already does both of those jobs, the two could add up.

In real life, that might show up as feeling dizzy or lightheaded (especially standing up), unusual tiredness, or a slower pulse. I'll be honest, this is theoretical and based only on lab and animal work, not human studies. But calamus has its own safety baggage and isn't something I'd recommend anyway. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

Theoretically, taking calamus with drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 might increase drug levels and potentially increase the risk of adverse effects.
In vitro research shows that calamus extract inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme.

Your Viskazide combines two medicines, and one of them, pindolol, is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. In lab tests, calamus seems to slow this enzyme down. In theory, that could let pindolol build up a bit higher than usual, nudging up its blood-pressure and heart-rate lowering effects. You might notice things like feeling lightheaded, unusually tired, a slower pulse, or dizziness when you stand up. The hydrochlorothiazide part isn't really the concern here.

Honestly though, this is based only on test-tube research, not real people, so it's a theoretical worry. Calamus also carries its own safety concerns and is generally best avoided. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.
