Theoretically, taking calamus with other antihypertensive medications might increase the risk of hypotension.

Timolide is a combination pill: hydrochlorothiazide (a water pill) plus timolol (a beta-blocker). Both of these already work to bring your blood pressure down, and the beta-blocker also slows your heart rate. The concern here is simple: in animal studies, calamus appears to slow the heart and lower blood pressure too. Stack that on top of your medication and you could, in theory, get too much of a good thing.

What that might feel like is dizziness, lightheadedness when you stand up, unusual tiredness, or a slower-than-normal pulse. To be fair, this is based only on lab and animal research, not solid human studies, and calamus itself is best avoided for safety reasons. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Theoretically, taking calamus with drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 might increase drug levels and potentially increase the risk of adverse effects.
In vitro research shows that calamus extract inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme.

Timolide combines two medicines: timolol, a beta-blocker, and hydrochlorothiazide, a water pill. The part that matters here is timolol, since your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear it. Lab studies suggest calamus may block that enzyme. If it does, timolol could build up in your system and hit a little harder than expected.

In real terms, that might mean a slower heart rate, lower blood pressure, dizziness, or feeling unusually tired. I want to be honest though: this is only seen in test-tube research, not in people, so the concern is theoretical. Calamus has its own safety worries anyway. Before mixing the two, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.
