Sildenafil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Calamus interacts with.

Theoretically, taking calamus with drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 might increase drug levels and potentially increase the risk of adverse effects.
In vitro research shows that calamus extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme.

Here's the gist for sildenafil (Viagra or Revatio): your liver clears it mainly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies suggest calamus may slow that enzyme down. If that happens in the body, sildenafil could hang around longer and reach higher levels than usual, which can mean stronger side effects like headache, facial flushing, a stuffy nose, dizziness, or a drop in blood pressure.

I want to be straight with you, though: this is theoretical, based only on test-tube research, not real-world cases. On top of that, calamus carries its own safety concerns and is best avoided anyway. Before you mix the two, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.

What Is Sildenafil Used For?

Brand name: Revatio

Sildenafil treats two distinct conditions depending on the product. Viagra (tablet) and Vybrique (dissolving oral film) are approved for erectile dysfunction (ED) — difficulty getting or keeping an erection. Generic sildenafil tablets and oral film are also approved for ED.

Revatio and several generic sildenafil products (tablets, oral suspension, and injection) are used for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) — high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs — in adults to improve exercise ability and slow the disease from getting worse. Revatio oral suspension and injection are also approved for PAH in children ages 1 to 17.
