Here's the thing to know: sodium nitroprusside is a powerful IV medicine given in the hospital to lower blood pressure quickly, usually with close monitoring. The concern with calamus is that animal studies suggest it can slow the heart and lower blood pressure on its own. Stack that on top of a drug whose whole job is dropping blood pressure, and in theory you could get too much of that effect, things like dizziness, lightheadedness, a racing or weak pulse, or blood pressure that falls too low.

To be honest, this is very theoretical and based only on lab and animal work, not human studies. Since nitroprusside is given under supervision, your care team is watching closely. Still, calamus has real safety worries of its own, so mention any supplements to your doctor or pharmacist.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.
