Why this applies to Canagliflozin

Canagliflozin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Capsicum interacts with.

Theoretically, taking capsicum with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Preliminary clinical research shows that consuming capsicum 5 grams along with a glucose drink attenuates the rise in plasma glucose after 30 minutes by 21%, decreases the 2-hour postprandial area under the curve of plasma glucose by 11%, and increases the 2-hour postprandial area under the curve of plasma insulin by 58% in healthy individuals when compared with placebo. Other clinical research shows that taking capsicum 5 mg daily for 28 days significantly reduces postprandial blood glucose and insulin levels, but not fasting blood glucose and insulin levels, in patients with gestational diabetes.

Here's the gist: capsicum (chili pepper) may have a mild blood-sugar-lowering effect of its own. Some early studies suggest it can blunt the rise in glucose after a meal and nudge insulin up a bit. Pair that with canagliflozin (Invokana), which already works to push your blood sugar down by helping your kidneys flush out extra glucose, and the two together could in theory lower your numbers more than expected.

The realistic concern is hypoglycemia, meaning shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling lightheaded. Honestly, this is mostly a worry with concentrated capsicum supplements, not the chili you sprinkle on dinner. The evidence here is fairly weak, so don't panic. If you're considering a capsicum supplement, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your readings.

What Is Canagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Invokana

Invokana (canagliflozin) is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes. It is not for type 1 diabetes.

In adults with type 2 diabetes, Invokana is also used to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death in those with established cardiovascular disease, and to reduce the risk of serious kidney complications — including end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization for heart failure — in those with diabetic kidney disease and high levels of protein in the urine.
