Laboratory research shows that carob, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Take carob 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with carob and your alectinib (Alecensa). Carob pods are rich in fiber and tannins, and in lab and animal studies that fiber can bind things in the gut and slightly slow how well they're absorbed. The worry here is purely theoretical: if carob blunted absorption of alectinib, you could get a little less of the drug into your system, which in turn could mean less cancer-fighting benefit over time.

I want to be honest that this is weak, indirect evidence, not something proven with alectinib itself. Alectinib isn't a prodrug, so it doesn't need carob to work. Still, to be safe, separate them by taking carob 30 to 60 minutes after your medication, and run it by your oncology pharmacist before relying on carob regularly.

Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum). It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. What Is Alectinib Used For?

Brand name: Alecensa

Alecensa (alectinib) is used in adults with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors test positive for a gene change called ALK (anaplastic lymphoma kinase). Your tumor must be confirmed ALK-positive by an FDA-approved test before starting treatment.

Alecensa is approved for two situations: as adjuvant treatment (after surgery to remove the tumor, for tumors that are large enough or have spread to nearby lymph nodes) to help prevent the cancer from coming back, and for metastatic NSCLC (cancer that has already spread to other areas of the body).
