Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Allopurinol
Allopurinol falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Carob interacts with.
Laboratory research shows that carob, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Take carob 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with carob and allopurinol: carob is packed with fiber and tannins, and the concern is that these can grab onto things in your gut and slow down how much of a swallowed medicine gets absorbed. If less allopurinol makes it into your bloodstream, it might not lower your uric acid as well, which could mean gout flare-ups don't stay as controlled.
I want to be honest, though, this is a theoretical worry based on lab studies, mostly about minerals, not a proven problem with allopurinol. The easy fix is timing: take your allopurinol first, then enjoy carob 30 to 60 minutes later. Eating carob as a normal food is unlikely to be a big deal, but if you use concentrated carob supplements, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Allopurinol page
“Allopurinol (Zyloprim) prevents gout attacks by lowering uric acid, and I would give this list real weight, because 5 of the 60 supplements and herbs on file carry a major rating. The largest cluster, 38 ingredients, is products that can stress the liver on their own, and regular beer or wine sits in that major group, since alcohol on…”

About Carob
What is Carob?
- Diarrhea (especially in children)
- Cocoa/chocolate substitute
- Digestive upset
- Acid reflux/heartburn
- Source of dietary fiber
Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum). It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a treatment, especially for infants or children.
About Allopurinol
What Is Allopurinol Used For?
Brand names: Zyloprim, Caplenal, Cosuric, Rimapurinol, Zyloric
Allopurinol lowers uric acid in the body. The uses depend on the form.
- Allopurinol tablets (including Zyloprim): adults with signs and symptoms of primary or secondary gout. Also adults and children with leukemia, lymphoma or solid tumor cancers whose cancer treatment raises uric acid. Also adults with recurrent calcium oxalate kidney stones who have high uric acid excretion despite lifestyle changes.
- Allopurinol injection (including Aloprim and Allopurinol sodium): adults and children with leukemia, lymphoma or solid tumor cancers whose cancer treatment raises uric acid and who cannot tolerate oral therapy.
Allopurinol tablets are not recommended for asymptomatic hyperuricemia (high uric acid with no symptoms).
