Laboratory research shows that carob, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Take carob 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the thinking with carob and your dacomitinib (Vizimpro). Carob is rich in fiber and tannins, which can bind to things in your gut. The concern is mostly about timing, not a dangerous chemical clash. In theory, eating a lot of carob around the same time as your pill could grab onto some of the medicine and slightly lower how much your body absorbs. Dacomitinib isn't a prodrug, so less absorbed simply means a little less drug working against the cancer.

Honestly, this is a theoretical, minor concern based only on lab studies, not on people taking dacomitinib. A simple fix is spacing: take your dacomitinib first, then enjoy carob 30 to 60 minutes later. Run any food or supplement questions by your oncology team to be safe.

Vizimpro (dacomitinib) is used as a first-line treatment for adults with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) — meaning lung cancer that has spread — when the tumor carries a specific genetic change in the EGFR gene (an exon 19 deletion or exon 21 L858R substitution mutation). Before starting, your tumor must be tested with an FDA-approved test to confirm one of these mutations is present.
