Theoretically, carob might also impair the absorption of oral drugs.
Laboratory research shows that carob, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Take carob 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist for droxidopa (Northera): carob is loaded with tannins and fiber, and these can grab onto things in your stomach and slow their absorption. The worry is that if you swallow carob and droxidopa close together, your body might take in a bit less of the medicine. With droxidopa, that could mean it doesn't raise your blood pressure quite as well, so the dizziness or lightheadedness it's meant to control might creep back.

I want to be honest though, this is a theoretical concern based on lab work, not real cases of treatment failure, and everyday food amounts of carob likely matter little. To be safe, simply space them out by taking carob 30 to 60 minutes after your droxidopa. If you use carob often or have questions, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum). It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a treatment, especially for infants or children.

What Is Droxidopa Used For?

Brand name: Northera

Droxidopa capsules — available as the brand Northera and as generic Droxidopa — are used to treat orthostatic dizziness, lightheadedness, and the feeling of nearly blacking out in adults with symptomatic neurogenic orthostatic hypotension (nOH) — a condition where blood pressure drops significantly when you stand up, due to a problem with the nervous system.

Both Northera and droxidopa capsules are approved for nOH caused by:

  • Parkinson's disease
  • Multiple system atrophy
  • Pure autonomic failure
  • Dopamine beta-hydroxylase deficiency
  • Non-diabetic autonomic neuropathy
Effectiveness beyond 2 weeks has not been firmly established, so your doctor should check periodically whether it is still working for you.
