Laboratory research shows that carob, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Take carob 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the practical concern with carob and your lorcaserin (Belviq). Carob is loaded with fiber and tannins, and these can grab onto things in your gut and slow down how well they soak in. In theory, eating a lot of concentrated carob around the same time as your lorcaserin could blunt how much of the medication your body actually absorbs, which might make it work a little less well for appetite control and weight loss.

I want to be honest, though: this is rated minor and is based only on lab research about mineral absorption, not real studies with lorcaserin. A little carob as a cocoa swap in your diet is unlikely to be a problem. To stay on the safe side, just space them out by taking carob about 30 to 60 minutes after your dose. If you use carob supplements regularly, run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum).   • Lorcaserin is used to help adults who are obese or who are overweight and have weight-related medical problems to lose weight and keep from gaining back that weight. Lorcaserin must be used along with a reduced calorie diet and an exercise plan. Lorcaserin is in a class of medications called serotonin receptor agonists. It works by increasing feelings of fullness so that less food is eaten.
