Here's the gist with carob and your praziquantel (Biltricide). Carob is fiber-rich and full of tannins, and laboratory work suggests it can grab onto things in your gut and slow how well some swallowed medicines get absorbed. If less praziquantel makes it into your bloodstream, the worry is simply that it may not reach the levels needed to fully clear your schistosoma or liver fluke infection.

This is a theoretical, minor concern based on lab and animal data, not strong human studies, so don't panic. Praziquantel is not a prodrug, so this is about absorption, not activation. To be safe, separate them: take your praziquantel first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before carob. Any questions, just ask your pharmacist.

Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum). It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a treatment, especially for infants or children.

What Is Praziquantel Used For?

Brand name: Biltricide

Praziquantel tablets — sold as Biltricide and as generic praziquantel — are used to treat two types of parasitic worm infections. The first is schistosomiasis, an infection caused by blood flukes (flatworms) belonging to the schistosoma family, including S. mekongi, S. japonicum, S. mansoni, and S. hematobium. The second is clonorchiasis and opisthorchiasis, infections caused by liver flukes (Clonorchis sinensis and Opisthorchis viverrini).

Both Biltricide and praziquantel tablets are approved for patients aged 1 year and older for these same indications.
