European Mandrake and Praziquantel

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Praziquantel

Praziquantel falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group European Mandrake interacts with.

Theoretically, concurrent use might increase absorption of some drugs because of inhibited gastrointestinal (GI) motility caused by European mandrake.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the idea behind this one. European mandrake contains tropane alkaloids that slow down how fast your gut moves things along. When your digestive tract slows, a pill like praziquantel can sit there longer and get absorbed more completely, so more of it may end up in your bloodstream than usual.

For praziquantel, that could mean stronger short-term side effects such as dizziness, headache, drowsiness, belly cramps, or nausea. I want to be honest though: this concern is theoretical, based on how these chemicals behave on paper, not on real cases. The bigger issue is that mandrake itself is genuinely poisonous and should never be taken. Please skip it entirely, and talk to your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything with praziquantel.
