Insulin determir falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Carqueja interacts with.

Theoretically, carqueja might lower blood glucose levels and might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs. This might increase the risk of hypoglycemia in some patients. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: Levemir (insulin detemir) already does the job of lowering your blood sugar. Carqueja, the bitter South American herb, may have a mild blood-sugar-lowering effect of its own. Stack the two together and those effects could add up, possibly pushing your sugar lower than you intended. That can show up as shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, confusion, or feeling lightheaded, the usual signs of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

I'll be honest with you, the evidence here is thin, coming mostly from lab and animal studies, so this is more theoretical than proven. Still, it's worth being a little extra watchful. If you'd like to try carqueja, check your blood sugar more often and let your doctor or pharmacist know so we can keep an eye on your numbers together. Please don't change your insulin dose on your own.

Brand name: Levemir

Levemir (insulin detemir) is used to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in adults and children with type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes. It is a basal insulin, meaning it works around the clock to keep background blood sugar levels steady.

Levemir is not recommended for treating diabetic ketoacidosis (a dangerous buildup of acids in the blood that requires a different type of insulin).
