Alogliptin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Carqueja interacts with.

Theoretically, carqueja might lower blood glucose levels and might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs. This might increase the risk of hypoglycemia in some patients. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Here's the simple version: carqueja is a bitter herb that, in lab and animal studies, seems to nudge blood sugar downward. Alogliptin (Nesina) already lowers your blood sugar, so taking the two together could add up and push your numbers lower than you want.

On its own, alogliptin rarely causes low blood sugar. But if carqueja gives it a little extra push, you might notice signs of a dip like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a fast heartbeat, or feeling foggy and weak. The good news is that this concern is theoretical and based only on early lab and animal research, so it's not proven in people. Still, it's worth keeping an eye on your readings if you try carqueja, and checking with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

Alogliptin is not used for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, as it would not be effective in those situations.
